I stumbled accross this organization while reading an issue of relevant magazine the other day. I have to tell you that I was really moved by this story. First of all, it breaks my heart to hear about people who are in such pain. My first reaction as I am reading this is, "Man, how could a person do that to themselves?" Then I realize that so many of us are involved in self-destructive behavior, secret addictions that we can't seem to shake. Many of us feel hopeless to change, isolated in our pain, afraid of what might happen if people saw us as we really are. The powerful thing about this story is I can relate. A college minister at a large church, a worship leader who writes songs about Jesus can relate to a young woman who carves obscenities into her arms. I struggle just as she does. I hurt myself too. I need rescue just as much as she does.
The other thing that moved me as I learned more about this organization is their reckless commitment to love people that many of us are repulsed by or just don't understand. The example these people leave us is a powerful one. I hope I can be someone who loves so fearlessly. I hope we can.
So, buy a t-shirt, find a way to plug in here or somewhere else. Let's let this kind of love define us as well.
